7 Things About Nikki Glaser

Nikki Glazer was a panelist for Blogworld (Now NME). It was on comedians having podcasts pros/cons. I did a pre-interview with her over the phone to get an idea of what we were going to talk about. Here’s that interview (cleaned up):

WHY DID YOU START PODCASTING?
We were drunk at a party and I agreed to do a bunch of podcasts That’s what comedians talk about and make lofty plans. I had 10 podcasts in development with 20 different people. The next day . Sarah called and told me to meet her some where to do the podcast. And I did. I just needed someone to do it. Sarah and I met at a party the night before we started. I never met her met before that.

WHY DO THINK SO MANY COMICS DO PODCASTS
I think it’s because we are ego maniacs and we like to hear the sound of our own voice.

WHAT’S THE APPEAL TO THE AUDIENCE OF STAND UPS TALKING ON A PODCAST OVER GOING TO A CLUB?
People want to be entertained. We are funny people when we talk.
It let’s them in. it’s more real. Your act. It’s not based around punch lines .I’m much more honest and I get to tell stories on the one liner jokes.

HOW HAS PODCASTING CHANGED YOUR ACT?
It’s made me more confident stepping out of that joke style on stage. We record the podcast with a small audience. I get to hear what stories work in the room. I take more chances in the living room when we record the podcast. The audience is generally our friends. When I started getting laughs from these stories (not just jokes) It made me more comfortable to tell them on stage.

I’m more conversational on stage. Not scared to share things.

HOW ARE YOUR PODCAST FANS DIFFERENT FROM YOUR STAND UP FANS?
They don’t boundaries. They think they can talk about sex flippantly. They feel very connected to you and you know nothing about them, there’s a disconnect that they don’t know about.
When I see a Ho-bot (fan of the podcast) I reach out and hug them. I feel that they love them more than everyone The podcast is very separate from my stand up. I want to be as honest as possible.

DOES IT HELP SELLING TICKETS FOR YOUR STAND UP GIGS?
It’s helps me get booked, if the booker is a fan of the show.
Sarah and I just sold a show to MTV. From doing podcast together, Sarah and I had a great rapport, it was a bit like we were dance partners. From that meeting, MTV trusted that we had the ability to host because we’ve had hours an hours of experience of it.
The podcast turned into a process of knowing each other strengths.

HOW DO YOU PROMOTE THE PODCAST?
Reaching new fans, telling people to tell people. Tweeting about it. We didn’t have a plan, still don’t. I’m so honest and over share on the podcast, I don’t need everyone to listen to. It’s a separate part of me. I like my uber fans to listen to it. It’s more like a bonus content to the Nikki Glaser experience. I don’t force people to listen to it. I’m bad with self-promotion, even with stand up. I have no confidence. I don’t force it down people’s throats. Mostly because I talk about my sex life explicitly.
